Karavali Sahodaya School Complex successfully hosted the RO’s visit as part of the “Learning Together – Academic Engagement Program” with Shri Lakhan Lal Meena. The session witnessed rich academic interactions and an engaging doubt-clearing discussion. This was followed by a session by Ms. Vamshipriya on key academic themes. The programme was held at Ocean Pearl Hotel on Saturday, 24th January, and concluded on a very positive and enriching note.

KARAVALI KARNIVAL: CELEBRATING CULTURAL UNITY AND DIVERSITY

The much-anticipated Karavali Karnival unfolded in all its magnificence on Saturday, January 11, at SDM School, Ashoknagar, under the auspices of Karavali Sahodaya and hosted by SDM School, Mangaluru. Under the banner “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat,” this grand celebration themed “KARAVALI KARNIVAL” spotlighted the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka and Ladakh, epitomizing unity in diversity

The inaugural ceremony was privileged by the presence of Professor Mathew C. Ninan, Director of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, as the Chief Guest. His inspiring address commended the meticulous organization of the event and the creative efforts of the students, saying, “The artistic representations and cultural exhibits demonstrate the immense talent and dedication of our young minds. Events like these are the cornerstone of holistic education.”

The ceremony began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the unboxing of the string of letters Karavali Karnival. Mrs. Firoza Fayaz, Principal of Prestige International School and Secretary of Karavali Sahodaya, welcomed the gathering and remarked, “This Karnival is not just an event but a celebration of our shared heritage and creativity.”

Students of SDM School — Sadhvi, Anjali, Anvi, and Anupallavi — set the stage by eloquently explaining the objectives of the CBSE art-integrated program, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and integration through education.

The event witnessed participation from over 25 schools across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, with around 20 visiting schools joining to observe the exhibits and cultural programs. Schools showcased impressive displays representing the food, games, art, culture, history, and traditions of Karnataka and Ladakh. The event also featured captivating cultural performances by students from eight schools, leaving the audience spellbound and enthralled.

The valedictory ceremony commenced with Mr. John Thomas welcoming Mr. Ramesh Menon, Regional Officer of CBSE, Bengaluru, who was the Chief Guest for the day, commended the schools for their exceptional exhibits, saying, “This event not only nurtures creativity but also fosters a deep understanding of our nation’s cultural diversity. Such initiatives enrich the learning experience and instill pride in our roots.”

During the presidential address Mrs. Joy Jeevan Rai, Principal of SDM School, encouraged students with her powerful words, “The values of respecting elders and loving our nation should be cultivated from an early age, for these are the bedrock of a harmonious community.

All participating schools were honoured with mementos in recognition of their efforts. The program was seamlessly hosted by teachers Mrs. Jane, Mrs. Soumya K, who added charm and elegance to the proceedings.

Mrs Asha Priya and Mrs. Margaret expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, schools, and participants for their invaluable contributions to making Karavali Karnival a resounding success.

Report on Competency-Based Assessment Training for Science Teachers (Secondary Level)

Date: 13th - 14th September 2024 Venue: Vivekananda College of Engineering Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Participants: 51 Science Teachers

A two-day training program on Competency-Based Assessment for Science teachers at the secondary level was held from 13th to 14th September 2024 at Vivekananda College of Engineering conducted by Vivekananda Central School Puttur. The training was aimed at equipping teachers with the skills needed to design and implement competency-based assessments in Science education. The sessions were led by Mr. Shiva Murthy and Ms. Manjula.

Day 1: 13th September 2024

The program began at 9:15 AM with a formal inauguration ceremony, where the importance of competency-based assessment in modern education was emphasized. The opening remarks highlighted how this approach fosters a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and practical applications.

The first session, conducted by Mr. Shiva Murthy, focused on the theoretical foundation of competency-based assessments. He explained the core principles and how such assessments differ from traditional methods.

After lunch, teachers engaged in interactive group activities, where they collaboratively designed sample assessment tasks aimed at testing specific competencies in Science.

Day 2: 14th September 2024

The second day started with another insightful session by Mr. Shiva Murthy. This session delved deeper into the practical application of competency-based assessments, focusing on how to incorporate real-world scientific scenarios into assessment tasks. Mr. Murthy demonstrated how to construct tasks that test a student's ability to apply concepts, analyze data, and think critically.

Following the morning session, Ms. Manjula took over in the afternoon with a session on assessment strategies and tools. She introduced teachers to various innovative tools such as rubrics and formative evaluation techniques, explaining how these could be integrated into a Science curriculum to measure student competencies effectively.

The final part of the training involved Assessment and group presentations, where participants presented their competency-based assessment designs. Both Mr. Shiva Murthy and Ms. Manjula provided constructive feedback, focusing on how the tasks could be refined to better assess student competencies.

The training concluded with a closing ceremony, The participants expressed satisfaction with the program, appreciating the practical insights and strategies provided to enhance their assessment methods in Science education.

The two-day workshop on “Competency Based Assessment (Secondary Level) –Mathematics” was successfully conducted on 3 rd and 4 th September 2024, from 8:30 AM to 4:30PM at Kannada Bhavan, Moodabidri. The program was inaugurated with a symbolic and eco-friendly gesture of watering the plant by the esteemed guests, Mr. Suresh Mahalingapur, District Training Coordinator for Dakshina Kannada and Mr. Ganesh, District Training Coordinator. This inauguration emphasized growth and the nurturing of new ideas.

The resource persons for the workshop, Ms. Radhika Ramachandran from National Public School, White field, Bangalore, and Ms. Kavitha Mohan from Deens Academy, Bangalore, led the sessions with energy and expertise. Their guidance offered participants an engaging and practical approach to competency-based assessments.

A total of 60 participants attended the program. Attendance slips were distributed to ensure proper documentation. The sessions were highly interactive, incorporating hands-on activities, group discussions and deep insights into designing competency-based questions and assessments. Participants found the sessions not only informative but also enjoyable and instrumental in improving their teaching methods.

The organizers provided breakfast, snacks, lunch and evening tea on both days, ensuring a comfortable experience for all attendees. Transportation was arranged from Moodabidri bus stand to the venue, making it convenient for participants to reach the workshop.

On the second day, the CEO from the Bangalore office joined the session online and interacted with five participants, offering words of encouragement and appreciating the efforts of the participants and organizers for making the workshop a success.

Overall, the workshop was a success, equipping the participants with valuable strategies and knowledge for effective competency-based assessment in Mathematics

The Session went on very well on both the days by both the Resource persons. Participants have expressed that the topics were very relevant and informative, especially the Question Paper pattern discussions was quite useful. It was an interactive training session.

‘SAMVEDANA’ Science Project - Paper Presentation Competition

Science Paper Presentation Competition ‘SAMVEDANA’ was organized by Dr. M Ramanna Shetty Memorial English Medium High School on behalf of Karavali Sahodaya Schools on 3rd November, 2022. The competition aimed at inculcating research and analytical skills among the adolescents. 26 CBSE & ICSE schools participated from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Districts and presented 54 papers. Juniors presented on ‘Climate Change and its Impact on Coastal Karnataka’ and the seniors on ‘Carbon Neutrality’. The program was inaugurated by Dr. K V Rao, Director, Pilikula Regional Science Centre, Mangalore. In his address Dr. Rao said “Observation, disproval of existing theories and asking questions are the keys for developing scientific temperament”. He congratulated the Principal for taking up a research-based competition. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director, Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research, Mangalore said “Quality of science education provided at foundational level decides future of a country”. He expressed his happiness for organizing a competition on aspects of environment. Dr. Srinikethan, Director, Technical, Nitte University was present on the occasion. The valedictory function was presided over by Dr Praveenkumar Shetty, Director (Research & Development) Nitte University, Mangalore. He said “curiosity and focus are pre-requisites for research and to dream high”. Distributing prizes, Mrs. Anuradha Shivaram, Principal of Manipal School, Mangalore assured that the journey of Science Paper Presentation competition would continue through Karavali Sahodaya in the coming years. Mr. Sathyajith K T, HoD, Physics, NMAMIT, Nitte opined that competition of such kind is nothing but celebrating curiosity, problem solving and cultivation of skills. Principal of the host school, Mrs. Shreelatha Rao said “Channelizing energy in research at a tender age makes students look at science not as a subject but a technique to understand daily life phenomena”.

Karavali Sahodaya Schools Complex Meeting – A report

The Annual General Body Meeting of Karavali Sahodaya Schools Complex was held on August 4,2022 at Anandathirtha Vidyalaya, Pajaka, Udupi. Principals from 42 CBSE schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts attended the meeting. The meeting began with a soulful prayer rendered by students of Ananda Thirtha Vidyalaya followed by the welcome note by the host Principal Dr. Geeta Shashidhar. Addressing the gathering, the President of the Anandathirtha Trust, Mr. Nagaraj Ballal, urged all the Principals to work together towards the betterment of their students. In her inaugural address, Mrs. Shreelatha Rao, President of Karavali Sahodaya Schools Complex spoke about the importance of the Sahodaya which literally means ‘Rising Together’. The Secretary, Mrs. Abhilasha S. presented the minutes of the previous meeting. The Joint Secretary, Mrs. Anuradha Shivaram spoke on the objectives of the Sahodaya Schools Complex and the genesis of the Karavali Sahodaya Schools Complex. The Treasurer, Mr. Prashanth D’Souza presented the financial statement for the year. In the discussions that followed, decisions were taken on several important matters such as, conducting a Sahodaya Pre Board Exam for the Class X students in January 2023, compiling a Sahodaya e-newsletter, organising Capacity Building Programmes for teachers and Principals, an Induction Programme for new hires and conducting competitions for students with the theme Azaadi Ka Amrith Mahotsav. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Fr. Maxim D’ Souza, Principal, Don Bosco School Shirva.

Report on the 72nd Republic Day Celebration

Despite the fear of the pandemic, students, teachers and PTA members came forward to celebrate this 72nd Republic day. CANARA HIGH SCHOOL, CBSE celebrated Republic day in the school premises on 26th January 2021. Principal Mrs. Joy J Rai escorted the chief guest Lt. Colonel (R). Jayachandran A.K and Correspondent Mr. Kochikar Sudhakar Pai to the dais. The programme began with the National song ‘Vande Mataram’ by the choir class X. The National flag was unfurled by the chief guest Lt. Col. (R) Jayachandran A.K followed by National Anthem and flag song was sung by the choir . Ms. Dhanya Prabhu. of class X welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest to the audience. The Chief guest also honoured four Guide students with Rajya puraskar. Ms. Swati Prabhu of Class X spoke on the importance of the day in Hindi. This was followed by a speech by our correspondent, Mr. Kochikar Sudhakar Pai who briefed about the role played by ex-Canarites in drafting the Constitution of India. He has also appreciated the way the students are following COVID-19 SOP. The choir also rendered a patriotic song intended to arouse patriotic feeling. Chief guest Col.(R) Jayachandran A.K addressed the gathering and made a mention about the first lady pilot Ms. Bhawana Kanth who has been given the opportunity to fly Rafael fighter jet in the Republic Day parade in the National Capital. He also advised students to join armed forces for a respectable and disciplined life. He also emphasized on the need to uphold the values like Fraternity, unity and integrity of the Nation. Under ‘Ek Bharath Shresht Bharath’ programme Karnataka is paired with Uttarakhand , though there is diversity in region ,language and topography ,we are one as Indians . Through the dance programme that followed the students displayed the fact that India stands for ‘unity in diversity’. The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Master Vinay Kamath of Class X.

Features and Glory Of Uttarakhand

EK BHARATH SRESHTHA BHARATH programme aims to enhance interaction and promote mutual understanding between the people of different states through the concept of state sharing. As a part of this programme an art integrated exhibition was organised on the 8th of January 2021 at Canara High School CBSE, Dongerkery. The initiative was taken by Mrs.Joy J. Rai. At the inaugural function, Mrs Joy J Rai Principal of Canara High School, inspite of the Covid 19 pandemic, the students and teachers have put in a lot of hard work in organising the exhibition. Mrs Sreelatha Principal of SRSM , Mrs.Niti Mahindra Principal of DPS and Mrs.Rekha Shetty retired teacher of Lourdes Central School were the guests for the day. Students showcased their talents and creativity in making the static and working models, charts and posters to give a bird’s eye view of Uttarakhand. The core subjects were related to art. The history, culture, festival, art, architecture, education, tourism of Dev Bhumi as Uttarakhand is popularly known as was portrayed. Students of classes 1 to 10 contributed to this enlightening exhibition. Principals and teachers of various schools witnessed the exhibition. Parents were invited to view the exhibition. The principal, teachers and students by appreciated for putting up such a wondelful exhibition. This led to enrichment of knowledge of partyner state.

Fit India School Week

Exercise results in good health, long life, strength and happiness. Good health is the greatest blessing. Health is means of everything. India is an incredible land where the ancient science of health prevailed in the form of ‘Ayurveda’, ‘yoga’ and many traditional practices and games. These ancient skills of health sparkled in its true glory when the Honourable Prime Minister of India launched nationwide “Fit India Movement” on 29th August 2019. This movement aimed towards a new India with a blessing “Dirghayushya Bhava”. CBSE has taken this great initiative forward promising to make the young generation of India fit both mentally and physically. As a part of this, CBSE has involved its affiliated schools in various activities aiming to develop sports quotient among all the students to achieve a healthy life style. Adhering to the guidelines of “Fit India School Week” celebrated in the month of December 2020, Canara High School CBSE had instructed students to participate in the activities proposed by CBSE. A week-long series of activities like Yoga, Skipping, badminton and chess were assigned to the students. A striking factor of this series was ‘1 Day dedicated to family fitness’. Students were asked to send photographs of the activities and a collage of the same was prepared. This series also involved the faculty of Canara High School CBSE. CBSE has involved its affiliated schools in various activities aiming to develop sports quotient among all the students to achieve a healthy life style. A short report of the Orientation Programme.

An orientation programme for Lead Collaborator/ Member Principals of Hubs of Learning was conducted at Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, Udupi, Karnataka on 6th September 2019. The programme was organized by the CBSE COE, Training Centre, Chennai. Ms. Arunima Mazumdar, Deputy Secretary, CBSE COE Chennai expained in detail about Hubs of Learning and the duties and responsibilities of Hub Schools. She emphasized that the principals should have the motivation to build positive connections among schools for an inclusive educational community. She also led a discussion on team-building aspects and clarified the doubts of principles in this regard. As many 84 CBSE School principals under COE Chennai attended the Orientation programme.

Health and Physical Education workshop – 10.11.2018

Canara High School CBSE in association with Ratna Sagar organized a Health and Physical education workshop for teachers of various schools on November 10th 2018 at Bhuvanendra Sabha Bhavana. The programme was inaugurated by lighting the lamp. Dr. Jogiswar Goswami, Associate Professor and Assistant Director, Amity School of Physical Education and sports Science was the resource person for the day. He has been recently appointed as Convener of 'Committee of Sports and Physical Education' of CBSE. Having participated in gymnastics and aerobics at National level, he has won one gold and 2 bronze medals. Mr. Kochikar Sudhakar Pai, Correspondent of Canara High School CBSE spoke on the topic "sports" and it's importance of overall development in physical, mental and social well being of the students. He also spoke about the importance of physical education as a part of the CBSE curriculum in schools. Principal of Canara High School CBSE, Mrs.Joy J.Rai, Manager of Ratna Sagar Sri Harish, Sri Hemanth and Sri Preetham were also present on the occasion. Ninety teachers of various CBSE schools had the privilege of participating in the workshop. Mrs. Tripthi Rai compered the whole programme. Mrs. Aparna A.P. welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs.Sindhumathi.

AICS Cultural Competitions

As a ground breaking part of Canara Decennial Carnival celebrations, CBSE organized an AICS Cultural Competition on 31st July 2018. The inaugural programme was held at Sri T.V.Raman Pai Hall. The Chief Guest Dr. Krishna Nayak inaugurated the programme. Inauguration was very innovative and impressive wherein a student dressed up as a peacock approached the chief guest with a message in its beak. The Chief Guest read out the message and inaugurated the program. The Vice President Mr. Annappa Pai, Correspondent of Canara High School CBSE Mr. Kochikar Sudhakar Pai, members of Governing council Mr. Vaman Kamath, Mr. Suresh Kamath and Basthi Purushotham Shenoy, Principal of Canara High School CBSE Mrs. Joy J. Rai, Judges of Various Competitions, Team managers of various schools were present for the grand inauguration. In the inaugural address Dr. Krishna Nayak praised the achievement of Canara CBSE and its growth into a much reputed institution in the past 10 years. He wished the school to grow to a greater heights In the able leadership of Mrs. Joy J. Rai and her team. Our Correspondent motivated the students with his valuable words where he added art is equally important with lots of career opportunities. So the students should focus towards the opportunities availed by arts along with science. Vice President in his presidential address wished participants and urged them to give their best. In the series of events that took place, it provided a unique platform to the students to show case their talents and integrity. Master of ceremony were Meghana Iyengar of class X and Sameeksha of class IX. Master Akshay of class IX welcomed the gathering and Sai Pratheeksha of class VIII proposed the vote of thanks. The valedictory of AICS Cultural Competition was held at T.V.Raman Pai hall. Winners of all the competitions were awarded with certificates and mementos by the secretary M.Ranganath Bhat of CHS association. The Chief guest presented mementos and certificates to the winners of various competitive events and applauded them for excellence. It was truly a mesmerizing show.

Workshop on enhancing leadership abilities for principals held at AIMIT

Mangaluru: St. Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology (AIMIT), St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru and the Association of ICSE and CBSE Schools (AICS) conducted a two-day workshop on July 17 and 18 on Leadership for CBSE and ICSE Schools. The workshop was to enhance leadership abilities in school principals and help them manage the challenges in the current environment. The workshop was organized by the Management Development and Consulting Center (MDCC) of AIMIT at their Center at Beeri. The programme received an enthusiastic response with the participation of 56 Principals from Dakshina Kannada Schools. Fr. Denzil Lobo SJ, Director, AIMIT inaugurated the program with a meditation session and prayer and welcomed the participants highlighting the need for such programmes. Vidyavantha Acharya welcomed the gathering and spoke about the need for principals to upgrade their skills every year to effectively lead their schools. Rajendra Desai, Dean, MDCC introduced the programme and the resource persons who were to conduct the individual sessions over the two days. The programme consisted of sessions by Rayan D'Souza, faculty, AIMIT on leadership and teams and communication at the workplace. Vipul Redey, Head –School Enablement, Khan Academy highlighted the resources that Khan Academy could bring to create Collaborative Classrooms and Fr. Pradeep Sequeira kept the principals delighted and engaged with his sessions on listening, caring and understanding people and handling 'Gen Z'. Day two's sessions were lead by Fr. Denzil Lobo SJ, who brought in his rich experience of over 40 years of building and leading institutions, with his session on effective leadership. Surfraz Hashim, internationally acclaimed mind trainer, conducted very impactful practical sessions on mind mapping. Merida D'Almeida shared her experience of over 18 years as Principal of SMS, Brahmavar. The programme was concluded with Acharya and Dr T.J. Quadros sharing their thoughts on the programme appreciating the quality of the inputs and the hospitality and Joy Rai, president, AICS delivering the vote of thanks.

Report on CBSE Sub. Specific Training in Sec. Social Science held at Mount Carmel Central School, Maryhill, Mangaluru.

A training session on competence building in Social Science was conducted on 29th and 30th July 2016 at Mount Carmel Central School by CBSE Master Trainers Mr. Sajeev K. Joseph, PGT, Marygiri Eng. Med. School, Sreekandapuram, Kannur & Mr. James P.A., Sr. TGT, Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, Udupi appointed by CBSE – Centre Of Excellence, Kochi. 37 CBSE Schools in and around Mangaluru and Udupi Districts had sent 71 Social Science teachers to attend this seminar. On 29th July 2016 the training programme began around 9:15 am by invoking God's blessings by a group of students of the host school, followed by the welcome address by Principal Sr. Doreen A. DSilva A.C. The seminar was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Sr. Carissima A.C., the administrator of the school, the 2 resource persons, Principal and a participant of the seminar, followed by a short message by Sr. Carissima A.C., the administrator of the school. The session started with an introduction by Mr. James P.A. and an ice breaker activity. In the first session Mr. Sajeev Joseph discussed about the importance of NCF 2005 in Social Science. The main guiding principles were connecting knowledge of life to outside school circle, learning the concept than rote, enriching curriculum and overall development of children and not being text book centric and to reduce exam stress. In the second session various methods and strategies of teaching Social Science were discussed by Mr. James and the participants were reminded of Dr. Gardener's theory of 8 multiple intelligence and were guided how to create strategies of teaching activities and methods according to the student's caliber. This was followed by different methods of teaching Social Science that can be incorporated in their teaching learning process. The importance of interdisciplinary approach was discussed by Mr. Joseph, where the teachers learnt not only to link the other disciplines / subjects but how to inter link the boundaries of Social Science subjects and the need to open up to a plurality approach. It was followed by Bloom taxonomy of educational objectives where the group was preoccupied with activities. They also learnt about the taxonomy of educational objectives where taxonomy is a classification into their domain such as cognitive, affective and psychomotor. The day ended with the preparation of a sample lesson plan in groups and its presentation. Home assignment included the sample of individual lesson plans. On the second day, the discussion was about how to assess and evaluate Social Science - The members learnt various tools to assess the subject. - The features to improve assessment skill and the different kinds of assessment tools. - Achievement tests - its objects, types and steps involved. This was followed by 'item and item writing' where they were asked to differentiate one mark, three marks and five marks questions through various activities. At the end of the session, from each group one school representative had to present a detailed lesson plan, which was analyzed by the rest of the teachers along with the resource persons. Finally the session was concluded with Map skill and map questions. These two days training programme was interactive and highly informative with the aim of encouraging the teachers to eventually own the responsibility of taking up initiative to make themselves better equipped with tools and techniques of teaching methods, designing and planning lesson plans and evaluating the students with multiple intelligence variation in Social Science. The training programme concluded with highlights of both the days, feed backs from various school representatives and vote of thanks.
